Tooth-Colored Fillings
Silver and amalgam fillings are a thing of the past! With new offerings in dentistry, tooth-colored fillings offer a seamless remedy for restoring a tooth that has been affected by decay. Made of strong, long-lasting composite resin, these fillings blend your tooth enamel for virtually undetectable restoration.
Restoring a tooth that has been affected by decay is a common dental procedure that is remedied seamlessly with tooth-colored fillings. They reduce the amount of bacteria in a patient’s mouth, improve the overall health of the tooth, and can delay the need for additional dental work.
How Tooth-Colored Fillings Work
The procedure isn’t all that different from that of traditional silver fillings:
- For comfort, we will administer a local anesthetic to the area, and laughing gas is available if you desire a little extra relaxation.
- Then, we remove all decay from the tooth. Tooth-colored fillings require less tooth preparation than amalgam, meaning more of your natural structure will stay intact with less drilling.
- Next, a self-etching adhesive will be applied to help the composite resin bond to the tooth enamel. The area will be completely dried, and another application of the adhesive will go on that will be hardened with a special light.
- Finally, the composite resin is packed into the prepared area using special tools and shaped to fit your bite. Once the filling has been hardened and polished, the procedure is complete.
After your filling, you may experience some sensitivity in the affected tooth. Discomfort should subside within one to two weeks following your appointment. If it doesn’t, contact our office for assistance.
